Federico Fernandez has exited Swansea City in a move which reunites the central defender with old boss Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United.
The Argentine has exited Swansea for an undisclosed fee which is reported to be in the region of £6 million, despite the Swans setting their asking price at £10 million earlier in the transfer window. Newcastle have doubled their initial bid of £3 million for Fernandez to secure the defender’s departure from Swansea on the last day of the transfer window.
Fernandez, who moved from Napoli in 2014 for a fee of €10 million, made over 100 appearances in all competitions for the Swans, and played in their 2-1 win over Sheffield United in their first Championship game of the season.
Despite a recent clash between Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and manager Benitez over transfer funds, Fernandez’s move to St. James Park follows the arrivals of Yosinori Muto, Kenedy, who featured in the second half of Newcastle’s 2017/2018 Premier League campaign, Ki Sung-yueng, Fabian Schar, Martin Dubravka and Salomon Rondon on a one-year loan from West Brom
Graham Potter’s Swansea have featured heavily in the last day of the transfer window with the departures of Sam Clucas to Championship rivals Stoke City and Jordan Ayew’s return to the Premier League with a move to Crystal Palace.
